Anyone can create a new subreddit to attract like-minded users. This post will teach you how to create a new subreddit and its prerequisites.
Things to know before creating a subreddit
- Your account must be at least 30 days old to be eligible to create a new Subreddit.
- You must have a certain amount of positive karma to create a new subreddit. Reddit members speculate it to be around 50, however, only Reddit admins know the exact number.
- Multiple subreddits with similar themes are allowed on Reddit.
- If you find an abandoned subreddit with an identical theme that isn’t moderated, you can put a request to claim it via r/redditrequest.
- You cannot change the name of a subreddit after creating it.
- You cannot delete your subreddit once it’s created. Instead, you can post on r/AdoptAReddit, r/NeedAMod, or r/ModSearch to check if other Reddit users can take over your existing subreddit.
Steps to create a new subreddit
- Log in to your Reddit account and click your profile icon on the top right.

Click the profile icon. - Scroll down and click Create a Community.

Click Create a Community. - Add a unique name for your subreddit. The name should be between 3 to 21 characters and shouldn’t have any spaces.

Add Name and Community type. Then, click Create Community. - Under Community type, choose one of these options:
- Public: Anyone can view, post or comment in the subreddit.
- Restricted: Anyone can view the subreddit, but only approved users can post and coment.
- Private: Only approved users can view and post in the subreddit.
- If you only want 18+ year old Redditors in your community, tick the Adult content checkbox. This is suitable for NSFW subreddits.
- Click Create Community.
That’s it! You have now successfully created a new subreddit.

I’m Susan, the founder of Learn Social Media. As a caregiver I regularly work with vulnerable groups, such as with the elderly in nursing homes, and children with disabilities in schools. During my work, I noticed these groups struggle to keep up with new technologies.
When it comes to social media, this often led to feelings of isolation and “being left out”. The thrill I experienced creating TikTok dance videos with children with disabilities, or helping elderly folks reconnect with old friends and loved ones on Facebook, is what inspired me to launch this project.
